Personal | Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! To start the year on an uplifting note, I wanted to share a poem written by my friend Jodianne. Reading it made me feel uplifted and ready to take on the challenges this year will throw at me, I hope it has the same effect on you all.

My beautiful brown skin is the colour of the soil that feeds the mouths of those who judge me
My brown skin has felt the pain of unloved hands, the tears of my insecurities and the stares of judging eyes that don’t take the time
The time to see my strength, my wisdom
Wisdom gained from a generation of kings and queens
I will not allow your interference in my mind alter my perception of what I know makes me beautiful
Psalms 139:14
I will not allow this temporary world to question that I am fearfully and wonderfully made
My skin is no question, my strength, my wisdom, my kindness
I love my beautiful brown skin that feeds the mouths of broken spirits
My skin’s generation has been through it all but still our spirits aren’t broken
Our soil will no drought from your searing hatred
Our tears will moisten what has been taken
The fields will always have the strength of a thousand souls that bleed to freedom
Freedom that trekked the tracks of a destiny that would one day stand for a reason to march and say I have a dream
A dream that described the undeniable love of my beautiful brown skin
