Style | Living A Balanced Life

As a “woman on the go”, one thing I really struggle with is finding my balance. Sleep promises made to myself to get at least 6 hours in are barely kept. I’m in no way the balanced living expert, but after working like a maniac for a month, I’m now realizing the importance of living a balanced life. thefancynancy-the-fancy-nancy-nancykondo-nancy-kondo-nklmarketing-nkl-marketing-leather-pants-congolese-blogger-knit-sweater-toronto-blogger-torontoblogger--8

All of March, I found myself racing through the days, trying to get as much done as possible. Now that I have a small team, I can slow down, and find a speed that works for me. It’s all about being productive, while taking the time to enjoy what you do, and enjoy time away from it.

To stay balanced, I developed somewhat of a routine that I try to follow everyday. When I wake up, I talk to the boy (who wakes me up every morning). Afterwards, I pray and just put all my plans for the day in God’s hands. This gives me clarity and motivation to take on my day, especially on those days where I run on 4 hours of sleep.

Eventually I’d like to include a morning workout into my routine. After praying, I wash my face, brush my teeth, make something small for breakfast, and then get ready for the day. Morning routines are very important because it sets an expectation for what’s to come. My routine allows me to achieve many things, while keeping them enjoyable.

Another way to stay balanced is disconnecting from the digital. This can be excruciating because the Internet is like a lifeline. When my phone or computer dies, I feel a piece of me withering away with it. That’s why I always try my best to give it a rest for at least an hour every day during the week. Weekends are a lot easier for me to disconnect because it’s when I spend time with loved ones, and tend to keep those moments private.

Another way to stay balanced is to treat yourself every once in a while. I’m not a firm believer of “work hard, play harder” because I hardly play. Right now my time is better spent building and working on my goals. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the little things. Whether it’s a nice Sunday brunch, or buying something nice, I strongly believe in treating myself.

One of my favourite ways to treat myself is to prepare and enjoy a decadent cheese tray with a nice glass of red while re-watching Girlfriends. It may not sound like much, but it’s so relaxing. Of course my favourite treat is always a little getaway. Knowing that I always have a trip to look forward to makes it all worth while.

Of course there’s no such thing as a perfectly balanced life. It’s about finding things that bring peace and happiness to your life. Find those things and incorporate them into your day to day. Not everyday will be perfectly sound. The important thing is to try new things that make you happy, and try to make them stick.
